"Promising but ultimately pointless"
2 stars

Oops, a pretty bad clunker from Martin Ritt, a guy that has proven he can do better with the material they give him to work with. But here, he fails surprisingly.

Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field (fresh off her Oscar for Norma Rae, which happens to be another Ritt movie) start as a going-nowhere boxer and a hooker with a heart of gold respectively, both trying to achieve something by going to Los Angeles.

The movie chugs along very well at first, and Jones gives a very good performance, then all of a sudden it runs out of steam. The theme seems to be that these characters are on a quest for their own human dignity, but then it just simply stops for no reason. The constant bickering between these two is never resolved satisfactorily.

The plot twists and turns and offers you a series of comedic gags and a few dramatic punches, neither completely resolved, and then it just ends right where it started.

In the end I felt as if Iíve just wasted my time watching these two going at each other for 94 minutes only to end up achieving nothing, not even what it originally set out to achieve. My dad says that heís seen countless cases like this, but still, itís hard to remain interested in people that are nothing and after so many struggles end up in nothing and being ultimately nothing. 2-5
