"Be careful who you sell your soul to...they just might collect!"
4 stars

I can't say I approached this movie with many expectations, being that it was made for the Showtime movie channel. Well, I was delightfully suprised...and folks, I like suprises, and this movie's got some good ones!

Cuba Gooding Jr. sails by as a lawyer who's disbarred because he realizes the weasley rich boy (played with glee by Eric Stoltz) he's representing is actually guilty and none too remorseful about the horrendous crime he's committed...so the Cubester does a fine job of mishandling the case, the guy gets off anyways, and -disbarred and out of a job- Cuba takes off to Florida to bum around Ernest Hemingway style (minus the shotgun, mind you) and write a book. Only...writing isn't exactly all that easy unless you're Dear Abbey...I can attest to that this very moment! Months go by with hardly even a "It was a dark and stormy night" until Cuba befriends a lonely old retired man who gives him an unpublished copy of his manuscript, and then promptly dies, leaving Gooding as the sole benefactor of his brilliant and dark potential bestseller: "A Murder of Crows"...

And this is only the first 15 minutes or so of the movie. Granted, it's not the most original film, and I'm not saying you
won't half figure everything out before the climax. All I'm saying is that this is a thriller that delivers with tones of 'Faust' and other literary influences.

The cast has a pretty good chemistry all around. Gooding is delightfully low-key as usual...Tom Berenger does what Berenger does best - playing a cranky smartass. Mark Pellegrino is quite possibly the best of the bunch...watch out for this guy.

That's not to say the characters are the most dimensional...some are merely plot devices...but while the story is far-fetched, it's very well thought out and involving. Suspense at its finest.

The only minor annoyance I had with the film is what I call the "Most Wanted" Syndrome. A character has more FBI wanted posters out on him than J. Edgar Hoover had satin ballgowns, and yet HE PERSISTS IN WALKING AROUND IN PUBLIC WITHOUT A DISGUISE OR EVEN A CHANGE OF CLOTHES! I mean, jeezus, cmon, grab a Groucho Marx moustache or an Elvira wig or SOMETHING!

See it...if not for the movie then at least for the fact you can say to people "Ever seen A Murder of Crows?", and when they say no, you can say "IT SUCKED! But ain't that a cool title?". And if a mysterious stranger appears at your house and wants you to sign a contract with your own blood, punt their ass out the door! But enough about Jehovah's Witnesses!...
