Slumber Party Massacre, The
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Todd LaPlace

"Boobs + Death + the 1980s = Campy good fun!"
3 stars

It’s interesting that fifteen years after “Slumber Party Massacre” failed as a horror movie parody, “Scream” succeeded in not only being a supreme satire, but resurrecting the slasher film from direct-to-video crappiness. It’s also interesting that its two sequels lost all of the originality of the first and became disappointing hybrids of parody and true slasher campiness. But while the later entry might be the better parody film, it lacks the cheesy factor that makes “Massacre” a might bit more enjoyable than its successors. Plus, “Slumber Party Massacre” has naked boobs, and what’s a horror movie without boobs?

“Slumber Party Massacre” is a pretty self-explanatory movie. Its approximately 80-minute running time is full of two things: scantily-clad teen girls at a slumber party and a crazy killer massacring said scantily-clad teen girls at a slumber party. With a giant drill. That’s supposed to resemble a huge penis (which pretty much clarifies the symbolism of the first few inches getting chopped off by the virginal teen girl during the third act).

While this may not seem like the most relevant information — this is a cheesy ’80s horror movie after all — it is worth noting that the film was originally meant as a feminist parody of slasher flicks. “Slumber Party Massacre” is a horror rarity in that the director and writer — a.k.a. the people exploiting their female stars by showcasing their naked breasts — are both women, Amy Holden Jones and Rita Mae Brown, respectively, the latter best known as the author of “Rubyfruit Jungle,” a lesbian coming-of-age novel.

Somewhere along the line though, it was decided a parody just wouldn’t sell and the film was turned into just another cookie cutter horror flick. In its released state, the film focuses on a bitchy girl’s basketball team (the scantily-clad slumber party girls/scantily-clad targets of the phallic drill), the basketball team’s good girl outcast (who conveniently lives next door to the party) and an escaped serial killer with a thing for cumbersome weapons. Sadly, there’s not really too much else to this flick — killer escapes, girls get naked, bodies start piling up, killer gets his comeuppance at the hands of the few predictably surviving girls.

One of the biggest problems for this flick is when Brown’s screenplay went from parody to true horror, none of the satirical moments were removed. Innocent Valerie (the late Robin Stille, who appears to be much better than bad horror) just happens to start watching a horror movie at the same moment Anonymous Creepy Teen Male (either Neil or Jeff, but the film pretty much says it doesn’t matter which is which) comes banging at her door to rescue him from the killer. And, of courses, by the time she reaches the door, the killer has tackled ACTM to the ground, leaving Valerie staring at an empty porch. It’s just a good thing for the killer that neither he nor ACTM made a sound, and the drill happened to be on silent mode when it was being plunged into his victim. In another convenient moment, after Valerie fails to rush up the basement stairs with a circular saw (they just don’t make cords long enough for multi-floor killings), she just happens to fall on the floor just below a favorably-placed machete hanging next to the basement workshop tool bench. I know I often need a gigantic knife when trying to assemble shelving in the basement of my quiet suburban home.

So despite its many, many faults, why is “Slumber Party Massacre” one of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen in a while? Now, don’t get me wrong; the movie is absolutely god-awful and a travesty, even among cheesy horror movies. But this is even more than just another of those so-bad-it’s-good-because-it’s-ironically-hilarious-to-all-of-us-post-modern-hipsters movies. Because of it’s unusual origins, the picture manages to work on multiple levels: it’s occasionally a feminist parody, sometimes a horror parody, rarely a parody of parodies and often just another schlocky horror flick. It’s an interesting enough mix to transform an atrocious movie into a strangely enjoyable one.

Things I learned from watching “Slumber Party Massacre”: (1)High school girl basketball teams all take sexy group showers. (2) Reading issues of Playgirl does not qualify you as one of the slutty girls that is destined for death at the hands of a phallic-drill-wielding psycho. (3) If you’re a pizza delivery guy, don’t deliver to a house full of horny nubile teens when a serial killer gets loose, because you’re going to find yourself missing your eyeballs.
