Slumber Party Massacre III

by Jack Sommersby

"Elicits 'Slumber' Rather Than Scares"
1 stars

Obviously, we're supposed to be inclined to give it a look-see solely because of its catchy title, but it'll only appease those who've undergone a frontal lobotomy.

You don't have to be a prig to despise something by the insipid likes of Slumber Party Massacre III, for it unforgivably fails to deliver the goods even for the most undemanding of audiences, which is a case of sheer ineptitude being that "the goods" one asks for in a flick like this are merely an ample amount of gore and nudity. I didn't see the first two entries in this series, but I have seen plenty of entries in the slasher sub-genre to know that the makers of SPMIII have set their sights low and still managed to perfectly screw up what should've been a no-brainer of an assignment. Six attractive high-school girls have a sleepover in one of their friends' posh Malibu house and are systematically slaughtered by an identified assailant who employs killing methods ranging from electrocution (dropping a vibrator in the shower), impalement (a wooden House for Sale sign through the torso), a mallet walloped on the back of a cranium (though why such a thing would be kept in the house is anyone's guess: crochet in Malibu; pu-lease), a spear gun to the abdomen (so that's why we were shown stuffed dolphins on the basement wall beforehand!). The movie opens on the beach where a volleyball game is being played by our estrogen-fueled specimens, and not just so we can revel in their bikini-clad selves but so three male characters can be introduced into the mix to serve as possible murder suspects later on down the line, including a Goth type dressed all in black who we're left to assume takes one of the girls' address book that conveniently falls out of a purse, though he pales by comparison to another male whose idea of light reading is a book on human anatomy. After receiving a couple of creepy phone calls, the heroine calls the police only to be brushed off that they're probably harmless pranks (naturally, it's the white cop who's made obtuse and not the acute black cop who suspects that maybe there's something to her claims), and rather than waiting until the last section to reveal the killer's identity, both us and the girls are made privy to it just past the midway mark, with the nondescript culprit about as menacing as a fly on a drinking glass (plus, he bears an unfortunate resmeblance to that mediocre actor William McNamara, the serial killer in 1995's blah Copycat). SPMIII is abysmally paced, impersonally photographed, cheesily scored, idiotically plotted, amateurishly acted. Most detrimental of all, it offers up only semblances of gore and sporadic glimpses of skin, as if the director were "above" such requisites. Where second sequels Prom Night III: The Last Kiss and Sleepaway Camp III: Unhappy Campers were enjoyable, SPMIII is a prime example of titanic tedium.

Buy some Fangoria and Penthouse magazines instead.
