"Whether it came before or after 'Blair Witch', it's just not as good"
3 stars

Much like the BLAIR WITCH PROJECT before all the hype, THE LAST BROADCAST is an obscure independent film shot in a mockumentary style, about a reporter investigating the disappearance of a film crew that went into the woods to investigate the New Jersey Devil, with only their footage being found the following morning.

While there has been some controversy indicating that this movie came out before Blair Witch, and was ripped off by the makers of that film, the similarities are superficial at best.

When the hosts of a paranormal-themed cable access show decide to go camping in the woods in search of the Jersey Devil, they are each attacked and dragged off, with only one member of the crew surviving. Their film footage is found, but at first glance reveals no useful clues. The surviving member of the doomed camping trip is immediately suspected of murdering his colleagues, and is placed under arrest. Only reporter David Leigh (David Beard) believes there may be something more sinister going on. He begins to investigate the disappearances, and recovers some of the footage. The whole thing, while suffering from the inherently weak production values of a low-budget film, still manages to be a respectable indie horror-suspense flick with some intriguing plot threads - even if it isn't always clear how, or if, they all tie together.

Unfortunately, after a promising build-up, the whole thing unravels at the end with a completely contrived finale that totally destroys the mystique that the first 80 minutes managed to build. Although I didn't see the ending coming, I feel like the only reason I didn't was because I was expecting something much better from this film.

Drive-In Triple Feature Picks for The Last Broadcast:

I won't bother with Blair Witch since by now everyone has seen it and either loves it or hates it. Instead, let's try these:

The Mothman Prophecies: Has some vaguely similar themes, but much creepier, and with a much stronger resolution.

84 Charlie Mopic: another fake documentary set in the Vietnam war. An army cameraman in training is sent out with a squadron on a routine patrol, only to find himself suddenly thrust into "the shit". Some graphic and convincing visuals of war, and an especially chilling final scene.

Although THE LAST BROADCAST is a decent freshman effort, it deserved a much better finale'. The BLAIR WITCH franchise has nothing to fear - except, perhaps, its own hype and crappy sequels.
