Big Momma's House

"Strange things are happening. . ."
3 stars

Summer can do funny things to a person. Had "Big Momma's House" been released last winter, you wouldn't have been able to get me within thirty feet of it--I've hated Martin Lawrence since he began polluting the air waves in the early nineties with his foul little self-titled sitcom, and the prospect of him dressing up as a fat old lady isn't exactly an inspiring one. Yet, not only did I pay full price to see this movie, I actually enjoyed it a good deal. What the hell is wrong with me?

One might get the initial impression that I've capitalized on a prime opportunity to turn off my brain for the entire season--I mean, it's practically peer pressure. You can't take five steps in the mall without bumping into an M:I-2 display, and the charts continue to be ruled by dreamy teen pop sensations. But I've thus far resisted the temptations of a thought-free vacation; I stayed away from Tommy's latest superhero wet dream, and I haven't ditched my Michael Penn records in favor of Britney Spears and her magical plastic enhancements.

"Big Momma's House" is my first true dip into the pool of summer silliness, but I don't think it's indicative of future cinematic travails. I don't feel the need to rent other Martin Lawrence movies, or seek out a bunch of similarly minded slap stick comedies. "BMH" mostly served as a brief respite from the heaviness that pervades my other interests--a pleasant one, really.

Lawrence loosens up a little bit here--he finally looks comfortable in front of the cameras. He's been spastic and profane before, which gets tiring. A few injections of that style streak though "Big Momma's House," popping up at opportune moments and inducing an audience-wide cringe. But mostly he tunes the schtick down in favor of some surprisingly sweet physical comedy--one second of pained eye rolling under all that latex is worth a million "Bad Boys" one liners.

The plot is just as silly as you'd expect, but the movie makes it work. The tone is goofy throughout, so you're not even disappointed by the lack of a strong message, or even some faintly serious undertones. "Big Momma's House" never rises above formula, but you don't want it to. Lawrence plays a renegade cop who goes undercover as a portly Southern matron to capture an escaped bank robber and his possibly-suspect ex-girlfriend. The script consists of poop jokes, fat jokes, and mildly offensive racial humor--and that's, surprisingly, enough to sustain the ninety minute running time.

In short, go see it for Paul Giamatti. His best role since Pig Vomit.
