Pokemon 2
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Greg Muskewitz

"An afterthought to the amusing first."
2 stars

Going to see "Pokémon 2000" isn't exactly the ideal night out for a critic. It's actually quite a downside to the requirements of the job. I thought the first was amusing and cute for kids, and this is pretty much cute for kids too, but a recycled version with the same, if not more flaws, and not as much of what made the first recommendable, it becomes a task, and it was quite forseeable.

"Pokémon 2000" starts off with another asinine "Pikachu" short, which I really don't remember because I was trying my best not to pay attention, because in actuality, it has nothing to do with the movie except extend the running time to make it feature length-ish. But apparently you meet six new Pokémon during it --one of them being a sort of electrical plugged shapped character in bumblebee colors.

And like the first, the story of this is much the same. It's up to Ash, his Pokémon, and his friends and their Pokémon to save the world from destruction. Mew and Mewtwo didn't stick around for the sequel (Warner Bros. are probably too cheap) so they employ a stock mad scientist character. He's collecting all the different kind of specimen for his collection. However, his three must-haves are birds: Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno (fire, lightening, and ice, respectively).

The kids are accidentally captured with one of the birds, but they break loose and free the birds. However, the birds don't get along, and begin fighting and unintentionally destroying the world. That is until Ash, Pikachu and crew show up to save the day.

I could go on and on about how the story is completely predictable, cheesy and quite turgid, but we all already know this. But so what if it's a kid's movie. The first at least had some recognizable good traits teaching the avoidance of fighting, and some over-the-head existentialism. With that though, at least the parents could feel comfortable knowing that what their children was watching was more non-offensive. "Pokémon 2000" wasn't exactly offensive, but the violence was higher, the brain-cell count was lower, and it felt like it was sempiternal. It was only about 100-110 minutes, but this came off feeling a lot more like a subterfuge to further cash in on last year's extravaganza. After all, isn't that's what's expected?

Yes, it's a merchandising gig. But oddly enough, "Pokémon" seems to have phased out since last fall, and kids haven't been as fussy about seeing this. On my way out of the screening, I heard a father telling his son that he thought the first one was better, but the kid liked this one more. Could it be that it was fresher in mind? Or was the action in this more inveigling? I sense that children will eventually, if not already, lean back towards the first. "Pokémon" may well already be on its way out.

The juxtaposition of animation from the first to its sequel has its similarities and differences. The drawings are still of a junky cheapy TV caliber, but using some of the profit from "Pokémon: The First Movie," they've employed some computer animation into this. However, unlike "Titan AE," the CGI here clashes and does not mesh well. The difference in quality between the drawings and graphics are at total opposites, and in extreme cases, makes the regular animation quite tawdry.

Let the kids enjoy it, but let them enjoy it at home. It's not worth going to the theaters for, rent it when it comes to video. After all, that's the best this movie could have hoped for.

Final Verdict: D-
