"Good thing they didn't call it 'Winner'."
2 stars

Movies like this one can be broken down into simple mathematical equations: Boy + Girl + Pompous Jerk + Lazy Script = $12 million bucks on an opening weekend (They hope!) Sure, a movie can be unoriginal and still worth seeing, but when a film seems to TRY to remain drowned in the familiar, people start to get annoyed. A few likable performances and a good soundtrack simply aren't enough, especially when coming from a director who should really know better by now.

When you're making a movie that's been made 50 times before, it may be important to add at least something new to the mix. Being unoriginal isn't a crime, but the laziness on display in this movie is stunning, especially coming from a director who's as reliable as Amy Heckerling generally is. The entire movie comes across as a quick production, hoping to cash in on the final wave of the new 'teen-movie' resurgence. That the writer's (Heckerling, again) only twist is to feature college co-eds instead of high schoolers simply amplifies how lame this movie is.

Gee. Do you think anyone had American Pie in mind when they made this one? It merely features both of the good performances from last year's smash hit, and some of the raunchy humor seems really familiar. Nice Boy (Biggs) befriends Alienated Girl (Suvari) and thus we start the interminable trek to "When will they screw already?" Of course the typical cinema roadblocks arise, such as the smarmy professor boyfriend (Kinnear) and the "Oh, she'd never like a dork like me" mindset.

When Nice Boy arrives at Big City College, he is unfortunately roomed with the three most vile and unpleasant movie characters perhaps ever written. I wondered if perhaps Nice Boy had been roomed with three normal people, then everything would have worked out fine. But these three guys are just nauseating, and I don't mean in a 'bodily fluid' kind of way. The three self-appointed ladies' men are completely cruel and arrogant in the most completely unrealistic way possible. They act like women love them, yet when they stand together in a group, it looks like a poster for homosexual recruitment. In one of the movie's shorter jokes, two of the roommates decide that one of them must have sex with an "unattractive" girl and take one for the team. PLEASE! I went to college, and guys like this would beg for sex. Anyway, these three jerks are all over this movie, and they are NOT funny.

Jason Biggs gives his patently amiable performance, intermittently bringing an entertainment value to his scenes that are otherwise absent throughout the movie. Mena Suvari gives the best performance, but her character is so underwritten that it really doesn't matter. As her smug professor boyfriend, Greg Kinnear is often amusing, but he's left in the background too much, and his character is simply a one-note villain.

What's annoying about Loser is not just that it's a complete rehash of better movies, but that the cliches on display here are just the worst of their kind. Example: Suvari spends the night in the hospital, Kinnear doesn't care but Biggs goes ahead and buys her some flowers, and signs Kinnear's name to the card. This NEVER happens in real life! Ever. And it's just SO trite and unrealistic that the movie never recovers. You'll find yourself thinking "Hell, he blew it for himself! He doesn't deserve to get any action!"

Of COURSE Nice Boy is just a huge sweetheart underneath is naive exterior. Of COURSE Alienated Girl marches to her own beat, but is a real sweetie underneath her angst. And of COURSE the Professor is just a possessive, uncaring cad. There's nary a whit of something even approaching new territory, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, watching this movie is like eating the same sandwich for a week straight. A bland sandwich.

This is the kind of movie that takes a break from dialogue every 9 minutes and plays some MTV hit song from about 8 years ago. In this movie, they often use the WHOLE song. Take away all the music and the script just might equal out to a solid 45 minutes.
