Chipper teen comedy about a group of college-age counselors who run a camp of pubescent kids for the summer. On one level, the movie falls on purely superficial terms, assigning the typical stereotypes that most movie like this would have (the over-eater, the homo, the sexually deprived, the over-sexed, etc.). Shameless as it is common, the small degree of separation that Happy Campers aims for, is that it actually attempts to examine change and a certain maturity in a handful of these characters. On a small level, but of course superficially, it achieves. When the movie isn’t trying to appeal to the lowest numeral denomination, it actually makes some valid points. Unfortunately, those are far and few in between.
With Brad Renfro, Dominique Swain, James King and Peter Stormare.[Redeemable.]
