Players Club, The

"Showgirlz 'n the Hood"
1 stars

This movie could have been made twenty years ago starring Pam Grier. It's like that. Apparently, it's perfectly OK to perpetuate and even celebrate cartoonishly negative stereotypes, but only if you belong to the minority you're exploiting.

"Director" Ice Cube makes some pretty bad decisions in this movie, mainly in that his movie is dreadfully dull. You may wonder how a low-rent black version of Showgirls could be dull, but then you've yet to see The Players Club.

Good girl Diana just wants to make enough money to finish college and do right by her baby. So she starts stripping at some sleazy dive. Much to her surprise, not everyone who works (or hangs out) at a strip club is very nice. There are two amazon-type lesbian stripper girls, who run special hotel parties. One night, in a drunken stupor, Diana accompanies these two, and unknowingly becomes a lesbian too!

The slimy owner of the club is played by Bernie Mac, whose performance is notable solely because he's simply not funny. It's a bit surprising, as Bernie's been great in small roles in the past. (Think of him in Friday or as Uncle Vester in House Party 3.) Bernie gets a subplot all to himself! He's a cheap and corrupt bastard, so the local mob boss wants him dead. Yawn.

Diana has to keep her stripping job a secret, which makes for an uncomfortable scene when her college professor comes into the booty bar one night! Things get especially nasty when cousin Ebony the freak shows up. She loves to get naked and go to the lesbian's private parties. So now Diana also has that to deal with. Eventually, Diana's boyfriend tires of her profession, so he leaves.

For some reason, 2 Live Crew shows up at one point, acting like a band that's had a hit record in the past ten years. They must have stopped by to pick up a cup of ice and was invited to be in the movie. To be even a little fair, Jamie Foxx is pretty likeable as the club's DJ, and he gets to work some stand-up type material into his scenes.

Throughout the whole movie, there are random scenes that are truly bad, and at one scene in particular, I wondered: What was Ice Cube trying to say when he has a room full of partying black guys nearly gang-rape a small black girl of 18? Certainly in a party situation, you'd have at least one or two people (black, white, green, whatever) who'd say "Hey guys. Come on now. We can't really go ahead and gang-rape some girl here..." Cube's portrayal of the gang-mentality is shockingly unrealistic, and the way it is presented (seemingly for entertainment value) is questionable at best.

The Players Club is a slow-moving and completely unoriginal movie. While some entertainment value could still be gained from a movie like that, no such luck here. You'll know every single plot point before it arrives, and when it gets there it's delivered in a bored fashion.
