6th Day, The
[] Buy posters from this movie
by Scott Weinberg

"Cloning is bad, except if we're talking about screenplays, apparently."
1 stars

If there were ever an actor who needed a new direction for his career, it's Sylvester Stallone. Right behind Sly is Arnie, though. These two aging action dinosaurs are still desperately plugging away with these woeful action/sci-fi movies, and nary a one makes a plop at the box office. While not as awful as last year's End of Days, The 6th Day still ranks pretty low in Arnie's filmography, and that's saying a LOT.

While the subject of human cloning could undoubtedly make for some exciting cinematic subject matter, the creators of the latest Schwarzenegger dud The 6th Day seem more than content on presenting a film that is almost completely devoid of any originality or even a solid sense of fun. That, and it's boring. What a woeful year 2000 has been for the science fiction film. The most recent offerings have been rip-offs (Pitch Black), retreads (Red Planet), snoozefests (Mission to Mars), nonsense (Supernova), or just plain old junk (Battlefield Earth).

The most recent misfire is the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle The 6th Day. While it starts out with an interesting premise and also showcases a handful of talented actors, this movie is quickly demolished by a poor director's touch and a screenplay that's way too silly to get involved in. Since this movie is directed by Roger Spottiswoode, I suppose I shouldn't have been expecting too much. (You're a fan of this director if you enjoyed such movies as Turner & Hooch, Air America and Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!) While this movie offers several fancy special effects (oooh, futuristic helicopters! wow, holograms!), none of them are every really integral to the story, and the end result is one cluttered movie.

Once again, Arnie plays the hero, this time a helicopter pilot named Adam who has been cloned by an evil conglomerate. (Get it? His name is Adam! It's a biblical reference. How delicious.) The large part of this lumbering movie involves Adam's efforts to discover how he was cloned and get his life back, all the while avoiding a quartet of assassins who look like a cadre of Matrix rejects. What's especially disappointing about The 6th Day is that is just wastes what could have been a truly compelling topic, that of human cloning.

On the (somewhat) positive side, this movie features a few reliable character actors. Unfortunately, they are all wasted in roles that are either A) completely ridiculous, B) woefully under-developed or C) simply uninteresting. If a cast including Robert Duvall, Tony Goldwyn, Wendy Crewson, Michael Rooker and Michael Rapaport sounds pretty promising to you, well that's what I thought also.

As a guy who's been a begrudging fan of Arnie throughout his career, I've been known to cut him some slack in the past. He may not be Laurence Olivier, but I always felt that the big lug was a tough guy to dislike... but lately I've been reconsidering that. After taking a few years off, Arnie showed up in the woeful End of Days last year, and now we're supposed to swallow junk like The 6th Day. (Wait a minute, if his last one was the END of days, and this one is the SIXTH day, isn't Arnie going backwards?)

Maybe Arnold needs to get a new agent or something, because these tired hero roles he specializes in are rapidly becoming unwatchable. As in most of his movies, Arnold gets to emote more than a few lines of howlingly awful dialogue and he still seems to enjoy mouthing those truly terrible one-liners as one of his enemies is dispatched. (At one point he says something to the effect of "Yoo shuld git a new klone, so yoo kin skrew yawself!")

Several minor nitpicks could be forgiven if this movie at least had a pulse! You'll notice the requisite action scenes, mainly because they're tightly jammed between scenes of monotonous and inane science babble. I'm not sure exactly how many 'villain exposition' scenes your average sci-fi movie needs, but The 6th Day seems to have about seven too many.

How fitting it is that a movie about cloning is such a familiar combination of earlier and notably better films, not the least of which is Arnie's own Total Recall. Since the screenwriters are obviously under the mistaken assumption that 'timely equals entertaining', you can expect many scenes that deride the morality of cloning. The end result is a script that's infuriating mainly because the whole cloning idea could really lend itself well to science fiction. As it stands, you'd be better off watching Blade Runner for the tenth time than spending your money on this mess of a movie.

While I'm not one to bash a sci-fi movie for being 'too brainy', I can fault The 6th Day for having delusions of intelligence while delivering a truly stupid movie. If you're still unsure, wait until you see the finale in which Arnie teams up with himself to thwart the evil corporation. I was immediately reminded of Jean Claude Van Damme in Double Impact and Jackie Chan in Twin Dragons. Trust me, that's not a compliment.

A quick note to the good ol' MPAA: You idiots! How could a movie like this one earn a PG-13 rating? There's a whole lot of laser-blast deaths, dismemberments and all around carnage in this movie! Next time the politicians point their holier-than-thou finger at 'Hollywood's waning moral code', perhaps someone needs to clean house over at the MPAA instead for their misguided, erroneous and all-around antiquated rating system.
