Joy Ride

"Not so much of a joy."

Maybe the scariest thing about this Generation X redux of Duel is the fact that none of these teenagers carry a cell phone with them.

Maybe the scariest thing about this Generation X redux of Duel is the fact that none of these teenagers carry a cell phone with them. A college-going younger brother goes on a road trip to bail out his older trouble-getting brother from jail and then pick up his own crush from her Colorado campus, while playing games with a trucker named Rusty Nail on a CB radio (“It’s like a prehistoric chatroom”). John Dahl (The Last Seduction, Red Rock West, Unforgettable) directs Paul Walker (looking enervated after the vehicular activity of The Fast and the Furious), Steve Zahn and a third-string Leelee Sobieski, featured more for her multiple close-up nipple shots. The movie is able to make the suspense workable, but it doesn’t know how to pace it or manipulate it in the same way as Spielberg did with Duel. Joy Ride stands nowhere close to matching or even mimicking the waylaid road-trip that Duel has gone down in the classic books for, and while this is better than just mediocre, it is an abasement compared to its predecessor and it isn’t as enjoyable as the superior film, leaving the ending predictable from miles away. Dahl has ostensibly squatted down for a younger audience here as opposed to his more mature works, and while Joy Ride is a recovery from Rounders, it is only a minor one. None of the actors are really allowed to do what they are capable of in their cramped sardine can, making this by far the most disappointing in the triptych of recent films released with or starring Sobieski. Joy Ride needed either more suspense on the road, or more shock while off of it, and the ignorant surroundings (such as the involvement of the police, or lack thereof) is strictly superficial and eschewed. (It was a gaffe to have Zahn and Walker exit the from the backseats of the cop car themselves, when in reality, they would have to be let out from the outside. How else would policemen keep their culprits in the vehicle?)

With the voice of Ted Levine.

Final Verdict: B-.
