"From Hollywood."
3 stars

Considerably tame (at least by my account) supposition of Jack the Ripper lore from Allen and Albert Hughes.

The tale (taken from Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s graphic novel of the same name) is an interesting, if not swallowable, detective case, whereby Johnny Depp rings close to his Ichabod Crane, only trading in his obsession with quirky gadgets for absinthe and opium. One of the unintentional shocks, noting the filmmakers, is how well the Hughes brothers restrain themselves from unnecessary technical trickery. They remain, outside of a limited amount of green-tinted opium trips, straightforward in the visual presentation, which is almost too good for the slummy London side-streets. A good reason for that could be the employment of Peter Deming, a typically trustworthy cinematographer, but if one were to offer a compliment to the directing brothers, it could also be a sign of growth. Growth, on any account, of the surface style, not so much in the content department. For as the determining layers are revealed, the movie humbles itself as extraneously plotting. And, as much as I find Heather Graham tolerable as an actress, her pulchritudinous meretrix (particularly juxtaposed against her peers) is, as anyone in “Ally McBeal” would object, “unacceptable!”

With Ian Holm.
