Saving Silverman
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Scott Weinberg

"What? Like YOU don't like some crappy movies too, right?"
3 stars

If you already think me too childish to write an objective review of an admittedly amateurish piece of flop like this one, then by all means feel free to dismiss everything that follows as the inane ramblings of a smart-assed 12-year old stuck in a 29-year old body.

If my movie advice has ever earned even one small iota of credibility over the years, watch as I now dash all that to bits by praising a truly bad film. And why would I praise a movie as woeful as Saving Silverman? Well, because deep down I'm really an infantile and immature little farthead. I think watching a guy get power-kicked in the family jewels not only has the potential to be funny, but that the very concept just reeks of humor. ME getting whacked in the crotch is tragic. On other people? The pinnacle of all things amusing.

Saving Silverman is rude, crude, sloppy and lewd. It showcases a stunning supply of truly UNfunny set pieces, only to have these big "gag scenes" end with a truly funny double take, camera mug or offhand piece of vulgarity. Rare is the movie that contains as much screaming as this one. Each actor (aside from the ever-vapid Jason Biggs) seems fully intent on creating the world's most obnoxious movie character. Nearly all of them succeed.

The story line looks as if it culled from discarded teleplays of the world's worst sitcoms: Two slobs disapprove of their friend's domineering new girlfriend and promptly decide to kidnap her. Their hope is to replace the raving shrew with a perky little blonde...who unfortunately is planning to become a nun this Sunday.

Plot, shmot. I'll admit that the story is probably the weakest component of the movie. But if you look past the overt banality of the plot and concentrate on each actor's individual performance, you may one day become the dribbling imbecile that I obviously am for somehow enjoying this movie.

Steve Zahn just kills me. I think he's hysterical, and if Zahn is what you like, then here's a movie that offers some heaping helpings of Steve doing a lot of painful things while screaming at the top of his lungs. If that description doesn't sound funny at all to you, then you are among the 96% of the human race who would most likely hate this movie from stem to stern.

Jack Black I also like. He has a knack for delivering the raunch in an offhand and loose style. Oh, and he also...gets hit in the head with stuff a lot and howls like a gibbon. Some of the more amusing gags in the movie come late when Black discovers a newfound appreciation for the male physique.

Amanda Peet has some strong comedy chops, aside from being a lovely lady. Here she gets to be mega-grade A platinum bitch from Hell and she seems to have a good time doing it. Plus she knows how to deliver a solid kick to the groin, which I believed I already mentioned as the true apex of fine comedy.

R. Lee Ermey delivers a shockingly disturbing performance, spouting the most vile things imaginable before stopping to drop his pants and poop right in the street. Again, if that doesn't sound funny to you at all, then congratulations - you're sane.

As the befuddled lead, Jason Biggs is an ineffective actor in a thankless role. It's no accident that Zahn and Black snatched the "vulgar idiot" roles...because although he gets the title role, Silverman just isn't funny.

Asking me if Saving Silverman is a "good movie" is like asking me if Juggs is a "good magazine". Both are definitely on the gutter end of popular entertainment, but they both do what they set out to do: Appease and titillate the easily appeased and tittilatible. (There's a subtle clue into my own latent childishness: I just made up the word "tittilatable".)

If someone were asking me for a good movie to rent this weekend, Saving Silverman would probably be about #4,656 on my list. But if someone as silly as me were looking for a manic, vulgar, colorful and insultingly stupid movie to giggle at, here's one I'd mention. It's certainly more entertaining than the similarly vapid Whipped or Tomcats.

You know if you're the target audience for this movie. You laugh at the word BONER, you consider slapstick the cinematic equivalent of ballet and you eat Twinkies for dinner. I know this movie has earned a LOT of bad press, but I've seen much worse slapstick than this one over the past few years. Plus this one has Neil Diamond in it.
