"Blood + Romance = A Messy Affair"
3 stars

This is the bloodiest, most violent, romantic comedy I have ever seen. It seems a bit odd to label such an unconventional movie "just average," but the three stars, maybe less, fit it.

Robert is a janitor, who, in the space of just a few minutes, loses his job to a robot, his girl to an aerobics instructor, and his place to live. We see his heart literally burst from despair. Things are so bleak, in fact, that he makes the unfortunate choice of confronting and threatening his former boss. A pack of security guards descend upon him, but he is able to grab a gun and escape with the boss' daughter as a hostage. The unplanned kidnapping escalates when the daughter, Celine, decides this might be a great way to get a few million off of daddy. Having been kidnapped before, she is able to navigate Robert through the complexities of demanding and retrieving ransom money. But, wouldn't you know it, as attractive people in close quarters are wont to do, they fall in love.

A pair of angels who must redeem their matchmaking failure rate by keeping this odd couple of crazy kids together also tumbles into the mix. Maybe people learn about this in Sunday school, but I had no idea there were angels with semi-automatic weapons. Needless to say, these angels are the types who will go to any lengths to achieve their goal of happily ever after.

The movie is inventive but a bit misguided. Ewan McGregor is the best thing about it, playing Robert as sweet and guileless, a man with bad hair tossed about by fate. He brings Robert a great deal of charm and humor, even in the worst of circumstances. Cameron Diaz is Celine. She has a tough exterior and seems a bit shrill in the beginning, but toward the end she softens and becomes more likeable. Holly Hunter plays one of the angels in a breathy, sort of sexual way that I didn't quite get. She also uses a lot of different accents for no apparent reason. She is grounded by her counterpart, Delroy Lindo. The list of actors in supporting roles is far greater than the sum of parts they are given to play.

If you are in the market for gun-toting angels and laughs, see "Dogma." If you like your love stories with a side of blood and gore, see "True Romance." This film is an effort to escape genre that doesn't quite make it over the fence.
