"The sight of two eyes."
4 stars

A troubled teen with a violent streak is put into a rehabilitation center with a group of teens with issues ranging across the board from depression, parental abuse, sexual aggression, etc., and who all have daily group therapy and open forums to help air out their problems in hopes of self-reformation and going home.

At initial glance, the potpourri line of teens with angst appears as though it may be no more than a rainbow-colored collection of stock characters — the large (and large-mouthed) bully, the feebly shy girl, the goth, a Native American, a couple of generically handicapped — but soon after the group sessions with Don Cheadle begin, it becomes quickly apparent that the problems being dealt with are compellingly grounded and unexaggerated. In its vérité-styled presentation, we get some substantially thought-about dialogues between the young characters that does not seek to superficially gloss over their issues like a revolving chamber, but it follows them through their progressions and regressions. Maturely heeding level-headedness, the filmmakers additionally avoid full disclosure behind the troubled teens’ reasons for being there — whether keeping mum on specific actions, or resolving to keep their psychology to be explained only through their own words and actions. And through that, there are some particularly heart-tugging developments that come across unforced. (Zooey Deschannel’s fractured animal character being one of those, Cody Lightning’s being another.) The other glance, the harder one to ignore, is that in which this was shot by: terrible DV; hand-held, loose-necked, fuzzy and constantly going in and out of focus, pixilated, bleached and color distorted. Directed by Jordan Melamed; with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elden Hensen, Roxie Fuller, Michael Bacall, Sara Rivas, and Lauren Shubert.
