Enigma

by Greg Muskewitz

"It's not enigmatic, it's boring."
2 stars

Decoded translation: S.O.S. Soporific wartime melodrama about a madman decoder who must return to his old base, where he suffers further deterioration from the reminders of his ex-lover.

The present motion of the story often tends to work backwards for the movie (the farther along you go, the more distance is placed between getting to a resolution and caring about a resolution), and is much too weak to serve as any substantial support. Instead, a crutch is employed by equally unnecessary flashbacks (separated by a haloed-glow) to attempt and add a human element to the coldly tepid arcanum. Kate Winslet is especially bothersome as she aims for smug precision, but lands with a splash nearer to prickily affected and stuffy.

Directed by Michael Apted. With Dougray Scott, Jeremy Northam and Saffron Burrows.

[Not to be bothered with.]
