Exit Wounds

"Could Segal just say once 'What, you were expecting Andrei Tarkovsky?'"
2 stars

I haven't seen many of Steven Seagal's movies, but out of all the ones I've seen, I'd like to see him actually be in dangerous peril or semi-fatally hit. These days, his films are hitting video instead of and his portliness isn't helping much either. But Seagal's "thing" is acting like a tree trunk to everyone around him and being so invincible he'd make the films of Bruce Lee wince. He appears to me like a stuntperson who was doing way too many stunts of the main actor, so why not just fire the main actor and go with him.

"Exit Wounds" is no different from Seagal's other films. It's a meandering and violent mess, but I've seen far worse out of the genre. There are some light laughs, good action angles to keep a casual viewer interested, and it has some good performances. But it's still lacking of wit and panache.

The main plot of "Exit Wounds" is police corruption. Police using their powers for evil, not good. As the film opens, the Vice President is pinned down by gunfire, and officer Olyn Boyd (Steven Seagal) saves the day. But since Olyn wasn't authorized to intercept him, he is busted down to a more rough cop shop, to "Walk The Beat". But Olyn is after a group of heroin smugglers that may tie-in with the recent shooting. He thinks it is Latrell Walker (rap star DMX), a wealthy businessman, who is dealing. But is he or isn't he?

There are a few twists and turns here, but nothing to really care about. Olyn basically sleepwalks from one scene to the next, leading him to clubs, back allies, stores and chases. At least one thing the movie has going in it's favour: it keeps us awake with some disposably watchable fights and chases.

Seagal is his usual, dry self. But the supporting performances by Isisah Washington as a good, earnest cop, Bill Duke as an aging officer and Anthony Anderson as one of Latrell's henchman are pretty amusing. DMX is fair as Latrell, but better than expected (I DO think he should drop the silly nickname and leave it for his music). The nutty Tom Arnold, Bruce McGill and Michael Jai White round out the cast. Behind the camera, Andrej Bartkowiak directed "Romeo Must Die" and brings his same visual style here. I must say the cool blues and tight angles are interesting for an action film, but he overstylizes a little too much at times, and the editing and transitions are too rough in areas.

And it all leads back to Steven. I liked Seagal in both "Under Siege" movies, because everything around them was a big, solid entertainment. You didn't have to worry about Seagal's balsa wood acting, because nothing was taken seriously, and he didn't talk that often. It's parly the same motion with "Exit Wounds," but I still found this film more problematic and overstylized. And Seagal has a few more lines here, which doesn't help.
