"Underrated."
4 stars

Refusing to limit himself to the onstage persona that had defined him, Denis Leary cowrote himself a fine, solid role.

Frank (leary) is a loser and thief who pinches a Matisse and takes off for Cape Cod to sell it. Frank's girlfriend Roz (Sandra Bullock), a Jersey girl who wants to leave Jersey behind, is torn between finding his work exciting and yearning for a settled life. This isn’t anything great, but it’s a satisfying romantic comedy that got overlooked. Leary and Bullock have a unique, affectionate rapport that makes up for a lot; Bullock, playing with her Jersey accent as if it were chewing gum, is warmer and more sensual than she’d been before, and Leary’s performance is a detailed essay on befuddled Irish machismo.

A good little movie — emphasis on “little.”
