Sandler movies can be very hit and miss. That's not to say that the movies themselves either hit or miss, but rather scenes *within* those movies.Happy Gilmore is a prime example.
While a really awful premise (Happy is a failed hockey player with a humungous shot who is shown how to play golf and joins the pro tour in order to make enough money to pay granny's taxes), and a genre that doesn't usually lend itself to big humor (sports movies), Happy Gilmore does often make the viewer burst out laughing.
Case in point. I sat down with Susan, a girl I was dating, and watched this movie on video. Susan's not the kind of girl to find anything but the most hilarious things funny, extremely intelligent, some might say cynical, certainly not one to play polite and she made it clear she knew she was going ot hate this film and it would be all my fault and she would make fun of me in front of all her friends and I would get no sex until the movie was out of her memory.
Well, folks, let's just say that on this night I rode the wild bull and stayed on for the whole thirteen seconds.
She laughed out loud (which I'd never heard her do before) and loved it. It was sick enough, harsh enough and unexpected enough to crack her defenses and put a smile on her face.
Sandler, though sometimes drifting in and out of amusing mode, is very very funny. The story itself is awful. The supporting cast is awful. The ending is stupid.
But Sandler is damn funny. And any comedy that can make Susan laugh til she snorts is a bona fide winner.
