A puzzle, not for the impatient, Alain Resnais' formal experiment scoffs at the idea of a story.Instead it has Giorgio Albertazzi keep telling Delphine Seyrig that they had an affair the previous year. She doesn't remember it. There's another guy (Sacha Pitoeff) who may or may not be Albertazzi's rival for her affections. Nothing much happens.
Still, if you haven't seen this, it's a dead certainty that your favorite directors have (especially Kubrick). The real star of the movie is Sacha Vierny, whose pristine, symmetrical, black-and-white widescreen compositions rank with the great achievements in cinematography.I'm not as sold on the film as Roger Ebert is (he picked it as one of his Great Movies), but maybe I need to see it again. At an earlier hour.
