Score, The (2001)

by Stephen Groenewegen

"Easy listening"
3 stars

The ďscoreĒ of the title is a daring robbery, but it also refers to opponents trying to outwit, or score against, each other. Director Frank Oz is preoccupied too with the ďscoreĒ in its musical sense. Our hero owns a funky jazz club in Montreal, and Cassandra Wilson and Mose Allison both perform there during the film. The Score may feature jazz as a recurring motif (Howard Shore wrote the original music), but it doesnít feel spontaneous or jazzy.

Nick (Robert De Niro) is an expert safe cracker who works for Max (Marlon Brando). Nick wants to settle down with his air stewardess girlfriend (the shamefully underused Angela Bassett); Max needs him for one last job. A cocky young thief, Jack (Edward Norton), thinks heís located a perfect heist - the theft of an invaluable 17th Century French sceptre from a basement in the Montreal Customs House.

The premise - the middle-aged criminal wanting to settle down with his girlfriend, but lured into one final job - was used recently in Sexy Beast, but the two films could not be more dissimilar. The Score is all dark mahogany, cool music and rainy streets; Sexy Beast boasted loud colours, equally loud music and sun-drenched Spain. Sexy Beast was kinetic and riveting; The Score isnít nearly exciting enough.

The first half concentrates almost entirely on preparations for the job. During the robbery we see some ingenious methods of avoiding security cameras and blowing open a safe but itís presented matter-of-factly, like an instructional video. Nickís too self-possessed and careful to land in needless danger, so itís hard to be concerned about his welfare. De Niro doesnít keep you interested in the character; this man can take care of himself. The final twist, which occurs at the end, was so obvious that I had dismissed it as a possibility about 15 minutes before. Itís sad that a team of four screenwriters couldnít workshop something a little more dazzling.

De Niro gives a relaxed, efficient performance, but thereís no surprise to his acting here. Edward Norton has stated in interviews that he only signed on for the chance to work with De Niro and Brando. Heís usually a livewire presence, but heís already retreading ground - his retarded janitor act reminded me of Primal Fear; Jackís arrogance recalled Fight Club (and itís way too early in his career to be repeating himself). Marlon Brandoís screen appearances are rare enough to be eventful. Heís still a magnetic presence - he dominates attention because you canít be sure what heíll do next.

The smooth professionalism of The Score washes over you. Oz and cinematographer Rob Hahn exploit Montreal very well as a location. But these actors, good as they may be, are treading water - and they donít generate enough excitement to overcome average material. The Score is so laid-back it barely registers, like background music. And whoever heard of a laid-back film about a robbery?
