"DeNiro and Norton score while Brando simply sweats."
3 stars

If you want to see this movie because you enjoy strong acting performances, you definitely won't be disappointed. If you go looking for a violent, fast-paced action/heist flick, you may be better off renting Killing Zoe or The Getaway.

Is there still anyone on Earth who doesn't dig Robert DeNiro? Universally accepted as one of our planet's finest living actors, this is a guy who can do almost anything. I say 'almost' because I was one of the 11 humans who made it all the way through The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle and I can tell you this: Even someone as skilled as Bobby D. couldn't save that garbage.

Ask any movie enthusiast who the finest 'young' actors are these days, and the name Edward Norton will pop up pretty quick. In just a few movies (most notably Fight Club and Primal Fear), Norton has shown that he surely has the chops to make it as a star.

Anyone remember Marlon Brando? Back in the days of black-and-white, this guy was a phenomenal actor. But time and calories catch up with all of us, and Brando is now mainly known as a mammoth freak-show of a performer, both onscreen and off. His presence in a movie is more a cause for morbid curiosity than anything else.

To have all three of these guys in the same film is like watching Batman and Superman duke it out...while Jabba the Hutt slithers around the sidelines drinking Long Island Iced Teas. In their many scenes together, DeNiro and Norton spit tough-guy dialogue at each other and the result is a truly entertaining volley of acting expertise. When Brando shows up, that's when things veer perilously close to becoming wacky.

And wacky is not what The Score is all about. This is a sometimes ponderous but ultimately entertaining caper movie, with DeNiro as the stern old pro and Norton as the young turk with fire in his belly. Watching these guys plan the elaborate robbery of a priceless scepter proves to be a solid sandwich of a movie, but like most sandwiches - you won't think too much about this movie once it's over.

Directed with a non-flashy yet workmanlike style by Frank Oz (directing his first non-comedy and having to contend with the on-set insanity that is Marlon Brando), this movie moves at a solid clip while still feeling pretty slow in several spots. The best parts come really early and really late, while the 2nd act is a pastiche of hard-boiled dialogue and an entirely unnecessary subplot between DeNiro and the lovely Angela Bassett, who plays the girlfriend who simply wants her man to "quit the life and go straight".

While the plot stalls more than a few times, the actors pick things up at every turn. The final sequence, which details the elaborate and nerve-wracking final heist, is worth the price of a ticket all by itself. But the energy and tight pacing of the finale is noticably absent throughout most of the first 75 minutes. And there's only so long you can watch people just talking, even if they are two of the best actors alive.

Certainly not a bad movie by any stretch, but a tough flick to really get excited about, The Score is easily worth seeing if only for the two stars. If only the screenplay were the equal of the cast. Then we'd have a new classic.
