"A Sapphic Nancy Drew Mystery on the Lost Highway after a tab of Acid"
4 stars

Well, after five long years, David Lynch is back to his usual nuttiness on the Lost Highway (after a detour for "The Straight Story"). And, once again, the debate continues: Is he a stunningly brilliant filmmaker with visions far too lofty for us mere mortals to ever fully grasp? Or is he just a pretentious wanker who uses his surrealistic style to fool us into thinking that nonsensical drivel is true genius? Well, I don't know, but I do know what I like when I see it, and I have always liked Lynch. His detractors will complain that nothing ever makes sense or is resolved in a film like "Mulhollland Drive", but that is the beauty of it (whether intentional on Lynch's part or not). When it comes to Lynch, the journey is always more interesting than the destination.

The film begins with "Rita" (played by the exquisitely beautiful Laura Harring), who is being driven somewhere in a Limousine along Mulholland Drive. When the car stops unexpectedly, and the driver pulls a gun on her, she is saved from an apparent assassination attempt by a car full of drag racing teens that plows into the limo, killing everyone but her. When she recovers and walks away from the wreckage with a nasty bruise on her forehead, she realizes that she doesn't know who she is. That's right, folks, it's the good old amnesia trick. She wanders around the Hollywood hills until she spots an apartment that is being temporarily vacated by the traveling owner. As the suitcases are being hauled out to the cab, she sneaks into the place and falls asleep under the dining room table.

Enter "Betty" (played by a very talented Naomi Watts, who is also no slouch in the looks department). Fresh off the plane, this beautiful blonde farmer's daughter from some small town in Canada has come to L.A. with stars in her eyes. She's so adorably naive and overly perky that you can't decide if you want to hug her or strangle her. Her aunt has allowed Betty to stay in her apartment while she is traveling abroad, so that "Betty" can pursue her acting career. When she arrives at her aunt's apartment (the one "Rita" sneaked into earlier), she is stunned to find a naked stranger in the shower. At first she assumes that "Rita" is one of her aunt's friends. However, when she learns the truth about "Rita" and how she got there, she decides to befriend the intruder (and really, who wouldn't mind a home invasion from this hottie?) and help her search for her identity. The only clues in her purse are several stacks of hundred dollar bills, and a strange metallic key with a triangle-shaped shaft.

Meanwhile, in a movie studio across town, Director Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) is being muscled by a couple of Mafioso-like businessmen to recast the lead in his new film. They simply hand him a picture with a girl who looks a lot like "Betty" on it (but with a different name, of course) and insist "She is the girl". Kesher refuses to bow to the mysterious demand, until his assets are suddenly cut off and he finds himself pursued by shady characters. The harassment culminates with a visit from a character known as "The Cowboy" who intimidates him into re-casting the lead.

Back with "Rita" and "Betty" we follow them around Hollywood as they investigate the mystery of "Rita's" identity. There is a definite chemistry between the two, who are very touchy-feely with each other. Halfway through the film, Lynch stops the prickteasing and actually delivers one of the most erotic lesbian scenes ever seen in a non-porno. Is it gratuitous? well, yes and no. It depends on your interpretation of the finished product. It does bear some relevance to the outcome, in my opinion, as well as being a damned hot scene. It also yields one of the film's funniest lines when "Betty" asks the amnesiac "Rita", "Have you ever done this before?" to which, of course, "Rita" replies, "I don't know".

Soon after their first go in the sack, Lynch swings the insanity into high gear as our heroines visit some bizarre theatre in the underbelly of L.A. at 3 a.m. It is reminiscent of the "Teatro de Vampire" from "Interview with a Vampire", and is stocked with a loony assortment of characters. Some strange woman begins singing a love song acapella in Spanish, and the girls begin crying. When Betty reaches into her purse for a tissue, she finds a mysterious black cube with a keyhole in the shape of a triangle. So, in other words, "Rita" has the key to "Betty's" box. A discovery that comes a little late, since "Rita" already picked "Betty's" lock the night before.

When they get home and open the box . . . well, here endeth the plot synopsis because to give away any more would be a disservice. Let's just say that, in the tradition of "Lost Highway", Lynch begins shuffling character identities. You notice that so far I've been putting the names "Rita" and "Betty" in parenthesis, because the Betty and Rita we think we think we know halfway through the film turn out to someone and something else entirely in the second half. By the time you reach the end of "Mulholland Drive", two hours and forty minutes later, you will either be utterly perplexed, or, if you are a Lynch fan, very gratified. "Mulholland Drive" is very maze-like. Not only does it make you sift through the characters' identities to try and figure out which ones are "real", but it takes many small detours along the way that may or may not have anything to do with the real "story". Some are enigmatic, like the young man who keeps having recurring nightmares of dying in a restaurant, so he of course goes to that very same restaurant to try and unravel the meaning of it. Others are hilarious, like the hit man who tries to quietly off his target and ends up drawing as much attention to himself as is humanly possible, or what happens with Kesher when he goes home early to find his wife in bed with the pool man. In the end, though, it's like a jigsaw puzzle which, over the years, has been mixed up with the pieces of another puzzle. You can put together enough pieces to get an idea of the overall picture, but the pieces that are left over appear to have come from a completely different box. Perhaps a box with a triangular keyhole.

His storytelling genius, or faults, aside, one thing that cannot be argued is that Lynch is a fantastic director. The cinematography is everything you would hope for in a David Lynch film, and he can make something as simple as a series of phones ringing next to various lamps fascinating. The surreal characters and settings remain vivid in the memory (the guy who played the dancing midget from "Twin Peaks" is back!). The cast is fantastic, especially Watts, who easily runs the gamut from perky innocent to slutty vixen to an angry and broken young woman. She's so good that it's hard to believe it's the same actress from scene to scene. The pacing, even when slow, still manages to be intriguing. It's strange, the compulsion we feel to keep watching a David Lynch movie, wating to see where it takes us . . . even if it ends up taking us nowhere. However, unlike the Oroborous that was "Lost Highway" there is definitely a meaning behind the madness, and there is closure.

The key to enjoying a Lynch film is to try to NOT understand it too much. The more you try to apply reason to it, the more elusive it becomes. Just sit down, shut up, take it all in, and let the pieces fall where they may afterward.
