Fact-based drama about the last woman who was hanged in England in 1955.

***************************
Dance with a Stranger. Fact-based drama about the last woman who was hanged in England in 1955. Miranda Richardson plays Ruth Ellis, bar hostess and mother, who has a long-time affair with a suave but scapegrace alcoholic racecar driver (Rupert Everett) while leading on the milksop Desmond Cussen (Ian Holm) and taking advantage of his magnanimous offerings. Itís tough enough to watch two of the main characters flounder so pathetically without any help. Richardson and Everett are terrible and completely miscast, and no matter how director Mike Newell tries to refocus his movie, the fact canít be ignored that they are the immedicable detriments. The period atmosphere is so forced that itís choking and synthetic, and Holm who is left to fend on his own doesnít embarrass himself at all, but he has nothing to shield himself from the malodorousness of his surroundings. Another stopping point for the movie is its non-existent impetus and current. With all of the characters being so cold and with none to identify with (Cussen is too obsequious and feeble), itís all a very tedious and glacial experience to force yourself through.

Final Verdict: F.
