Getaway, The (1994)

"A Mediocre and pointless vanity project"
1 stars

I guess itís always been like that with all the famous couples. They want to do love letters to themselves. Just like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez consolidated their ultimately pointless romance with the truly awful Gigli, as well as Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz showed their love in the interesting, but ultimately flawed Vanilla sky, and Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman showing their sexuality in the disturbing Eyes Wide Shut, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger also showed the true colors of their love with this idiotic remake of the Sam Peckinpah classic, and man what a dud this one is.

Why would anyone would want to remake The Getaway is just beyond me, but they did, and the results are disastrous.

You all know the story, wife Carol (Basinger) sleeps with gangster Jack Benyon (James Woods) in order to free his fucked up hubby Doc McCoy (Baldwin) from prison and to help them rob a race track with the aid of psycho Rudy Travis (Michael Madsen). Only that the robbery gets fucked up and Rudy tries to screw Doc but fails, and later Doc and Carol kill Jack and flee from Rudy and the Police towards Mexico.

This film is utter trash; itís pretty much a complete blow-by-blow remake which follows the original by the book. Itís all a carbon copy; with the only thing being different are the flashy production values, bigger action scenes, more showing off of flesh and sex courtesy of Basinger's Carol and Rudyís hostage-to-be-girlfriend Fran (Jennifer Tilly). None of the actors display any screen presence and all are utter shit, especially Basinger whom you can tell that she canít shoot a fucking gun.

Director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out) is so concentrated on the icing on the cake that he completely forgets about the cake itself. Thereís no intelligence amongst the characters, nothing to for us to relate to them and doesnít do a single attempt to do so, and instead relies on the more explosive action scenes and supposed chemistry between Baldwin and Basinger (and they have zero chemistry) which in the end leaves you with a formulaic crud of a movie that ends up being as idiotic and as stupid as the two glamorous stars that star in it. And donít get me started with the climatic shootout which pretty much showed the lack of brains this film has.

In the end, words cannot express the utter ignorance that the filmmakers and the cast show in this film, all because of the vanity of the two ignorant stars that were just looking for a project that would make them look great and get off on it. Truly a waste of time and a crapfest of a film that even make Sam Peckinpah rotate on his grave 1-5
