A piece of patchwork, much like the one that May has created by the movie’s end. But getting to that point is an odd distinction that doesn’t fit much into any type.

The outré tale follows a young girl with a lazy eye, whose only friend is a handmade doll her mother tells her to love through its case. Grown up, the loner works at a pet hospital and had surgery to correct her eye. Between the attention to the animals and the missed signals from her sapphic co-worker (overplayed by the generally likable Anna Faris), she manages to fall in love with a mechanic she has never met, but convinced herself she’s dating. One day her curiosity gets the best of her, and she gets his attention unintentionally (he fell asleep at a café and she was caught caressing her face with his hand), which leads to a brief liaison that turns sour when her unconventional personality begins to smother him. (On their first date, he plays her a short film he’s made, Jack and Jill, leading the audience to think it’s a porno, turning out instead to be a grisly cannibal movie. Clearly, the duo has made a connection through their dark personalities.) Likable as a puppy dog, just misunderstood, and after being ditched by her co-worker, that’s where things really start breaking out of type. It becomes a lonely girl’s descent to Frankenstein-ian madness, the cracking glass of her doll’s case pushing her over the edge as it’s assigned an anthropomorphic control over her. (There’s a great scene where May brings her doll as a show-and-tell item to a class of blind students she helps in; when she won’t take it out of the case, a bratty girl starts a rush to the doll, knocking it over and breaking the case, with the children stumbling over each other and falling to their hands on broken glass.) May maintains a balance of being perversely compelling, helped especially by a quirky and almost lovable performance by Angela Bettis as May. The problem is, the movie’s never much on steady ground, and the earth-shaker of an ending, or ending act, is so out-of-step with the rest as to strip it of any real identity. Directed by Lucky McKee. With Jeremy Sisto and James Duval.
