Y Tu Mama Tambien

"Taken for a ride"
5 stars

In the sexually frank Y tu mamá también (And Your Mother Too), two teenage boys are forced to grow up during a road trip with an older woman.

It’s summer in contemporary Mexico, and Julio (Gael García Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna) have just graduated high school. Their girlfriends have left to spend the vacation in Italy, and the boys are bored. At a family wedding, they meet an attractive Spanish woman, Luisa (Maribel Verdú). Julio and Tenoch impulsively invite her to accompany them on a drive to an idyllic (non-existent) beach. A few days later, when her boorish husband (Juan Carlos Remolina) confesses an infidelity, Luisa accepts their offer.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón’s last two pictures, adaptations of Great Expectations and A Little Princess, were in English. He wrote Y tu mamá también with his brother Carlos in Spanish and Chilango (Mexico City slang). Aside from an omniscient voiceover (Daniel Giménez Cacho), the film has a gritty, realist edge. It’s also a study of contrasts.

Cuarón’s roving camera and Emmanuel Lubezki’s dusty-dry cinematography reveal urban and rural Mexico, the poor and the very rich (Tenoch’s wealthy father is a politician and friend of the President). These hedonistic boys crave only physical pleasures - sex and dope and alcohol. The car they borrow belongs to Julio’s sister, a left-wing activist and fervent political demonstrator.

Luisa may only be ten years their senior, but she’s so mature in comparison to the boys she could be from another planet. At first, she playfully indulges their whims. These boys think they’re taking her for a ride and it’s amusing to watch them marking their territory like dogs. When they fight each other for her attention, she screams with exasperation: “play with babies and you’ll end up washing diapers”.

The actors are sensational. After an hour in their company, Julio and Tenoch are virtually impossible to like, but Bernal and Luna make them too recognisably human to be unbearable. Verdú enthralls as Luisa. She’s never nasty, even when she’s angry, and it’s heartbreaking to see her cry. When she’s slow dancing sexily and drunkenly to camera, she doesn’t sacrifice her character’s fragility. Andrés Almeida tickles in his few scenes as the boys’ perpetually stoned dealer, Saba.

Y tu mamá también snuck up on me - it’s not your average coming of age story. It is, finally, about the last taboo. Cuarón, who also co-edited and produced, saves his most impressive achievement for an ending that’s simultaneously insightful, bittersweet and liberating.
