"A more than worthy sequel"
5 stars

Ever since the masterful Alien scared the shit out of audiences back in 1979 and brought further revolution to the sci-fi boom of the late 70’s, I guess one could say that it was obvious the fact that the movie was crying for a sequel. Well, fast-forward seven years onwards and into 1986 as James Cameron, fresh of the success of his first full-fledged masterwork The Terminator, was then given the task of coming up with the sequel and what a sequel did he come up with. Although it’s not in the same league as its predecessor, Aliens shifts gears in the newly-formed franchise and in the process it comes off as a hugely entertaining romp from start to finish.

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the lone survivor of the ill-fated “Nostromo” commercial ship, is finally rescued, only for her to realize that she’s been drifting over 57 years in outer space and very lucky to have been rescued. After her recovery, the Company decides to bar her from any commercial flying due to her reckless attitude and also because no evidence was found of an alien craft in the planet where the crew had originally landed; the planet (called LV-426 here) is a already a colony in the making as well. As she’s beginning to move on with her life however, Company representative Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) informs her that the colony’s transmissions with Earth suddenly have fallen silent and suspicions are that the Aliens ARE in fact loose after all in the planet and the Company wants her to go back as a consultant with the Space Marines team headed there. At first Ripley abruptly hesitates, but then she decides to go under the condition that they’re going to destroy the Aliens. Amongst Ripley and Burke going with the team are Corporal Dwayne Hicks (Michael Biehn), Private Hudson (Bill Paxton), and Medical Officer Bishop (Lance Henriksen) who also happens to be an android. When they arrive at the planet, they discover a lone survivor: a little girl called Newt (Carrie Henn), whose family had been wiped out along with the rest by the Aliens, and whom Ripley takes under her wing in a motherly kind of way. As they try to search for the rest of the survivors the team realizes that they have been thrown into a situation that is way out of their league and that the Aliens are actually a bigger problem than what they think. Ultimately, making it out alive is the ultimate goal.

It was natural that by all accounts that this film would have to be equal to the original or at least supercede it, so there’s not denying the fact that James Cameron’s treatment of the Alien franchise is impressive to a point and to that point he deserves every bit of credit. He decides to divert from the mysterious primal horror of the Alien itself and the deliberate pacing from the first movie and speed things up a bit. The results are mixed; fans of action filmmaking will no doubt be thrown into joyride of relentless proportions. The movie takes a bit of a while to get going as the story settings are laid in the first 30 minutes, but after that it just takes off and never slows down. As the Aliens seem to come in droves of hundreds, the adrenaline never stops, the theme of corporate evil is more present here than before and makes for a feisty plot twist, but the best is saved for last when the breathtaking Alien Queen finally makes her appearance, and this is when things start to get a bit tricky as Ripley’s motherhood love for Newt contrasts very drastically when she starts laying waste to the Alien Queen’s nest.

However, there’s a downside to it all as the whole mystery behind the Alien creature itself is sacrificed and erased and in turn the Alien creature stops being the focus and instead becomes a plot component as creature numbers are multiplied and the Aliens are either wasted by the Marines or they go and waste as many Marines as they can get their paws on. The majority of characters are pretty much cardboard cutouts filled with lame dialogue and humor and are also used as mere components for carnage. The Alien Queen helps salvage plenty of the mystery of the Alien as it expands on its back story but it ultimately becomes the requisite baddie as the film continues on towards the climatic showdown. The film’s fast pace and complete focus on plot blocks completely whatever primal fear suspense there could be in order to help the Alien’s original mysterious tone, opting instead for a more traditional edge of your seat thrill ride via style over substance. Although ultimately the film comes off as a kick-ass, entertaining yarn, one has to admit that a bit of a disappointment isn’t out of the question.

Sigourney Weaver returns to reprise her role as Ellen Ripley, but here she’s just no mere survivor as her fighting and motherhood instincts as well as her apparent ignorance of her sexuality give her a more profound amount of depth than ever before; she’s here to kick Alien ass all the way and not leave a single one standing. Weaver’s performance earned her an Oscar nomination and it was more than well deserved as she manages to carve out the prototypical female heroine to full bloom. The supporting cast is a mixed bag, with Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen and Paul Reiser doing really respectable work here. Bill Paxton’s character though was a tad too annoying and too pathetic to be actually enjoyable.

Ultimately, as an action film, it kick ass and few films can stand beside it in terms of sheer entertainment value. As a sequel to the 1979 masterpiece, it hits and misses, but the goods outweigh the bads depending on how far are you willing to allow the franchise to divert from the original blueprint. Nevertheless, the sequel lives up mostly if not totally to the original, and its one of the handful of sequels that are actually worth viewing because of it. Highly recommended. 4.5-5
