Nine Queens

"Men with heisty eyes."
3 stars

No, this isn’t a spotlight on drag queens, but rather a bag-of-tricks con movie from Argentina.

One con artist saves another con artist in the midst of a convenience store trick gone wrong, and so the older professional tries to convince the young hot-head to help out with a big score he’s been planning. What? To boost a priceless panel of stamps, the nine queens, and “pawn” them off to a big shot millionaire stamp collector who’s in town until the next day. The next day? Well, that means things better get to movin’ and quick! Tricky, slick and sometimes clever, the movie is up to the elbow in legerdemain. The problem is that it plays like a recycled or light-beer version or Diet Dr Pepper copy of David Mamet’s tricksy concoctions. And like they say, why have an epigone when you can have the real thing?

Directed by Fabián Bielinsky. With Gastón Pauls and Ricardo Darín.
