Why'd this movie not do so well?Well, people went to it expecting Jim Carrey to start talking out of his ass. And he didn't. And they were disappointed.
Cable Guy had Carrey mugging. That's really what his fans wanted. But he played a dark, dark character. Not necessarily evil (a sadistic cable guy with a lisp who has no friends?), just darker than what the fans were used to. He's a sociopath.
Actually, it's not a bad film. Carrey is alternately amusing and creepy as Chip Douglas (get the name?), the cable guy who invades the life of Steven (Matthew Broderick).
What lets us down, though, is the direction by Ben Stiller and the performance of Ferris Bueller. Stiller (along with the writers) can't really decide what kind of movie he wants to make. Social satire, black comedy, what? And Broderick had a chance to turn in a funny performance. But he doesn't. He's dull.
Considering the talent involved (Stiller's television show was damn funny, Carrey's a comedic genius, and Broderick has the potential to be a great actor), this movie should have been better.Carrey fans probably won't like it.
