Simone
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Greg Muskewitz

"Hardly a simulation."
3 stars

A flimsy piece of sci-fi and a big-minded satire of Hollywood and movie stars, starring Al Pacino as a down-on-his-luck director who stumbles onto the perfect actress: the one who he clandestinely creates via computer imagery.

Problem being, once she, Simone (singularly monikered, like Madonna), is an instantaneous success, her presence looms much larger than that of even her creator. The movie has a lot to criticize the film industry and star system for, but not without falling prey to many of the points in contention. By becoming susceptible, director Andrew Niccol’s biggest folly is his own loss of creative integrity. In his attempt to whip up a flurry of satirical landmarks (many of which are cleverly humorous), his natural predisposition and affiliation to the sci-fi genre is exchanged with this bigger bid for the typical Hollywood film itself. Niccol, by trading his allegiance, is thereby placed within the same contexts of avarice that he himself censures. With Catherine Keener, Evan Rachel Wood, Rachel Roberts and Winona Ryder.

[See it if you must.]
