A slightly more convenient title, certainly not derived from the original Spanish title Juana la Loca (Joan the Mad), chronicling the turbulent union between Princess Joan of Castile and Philip of Flanders.

Betrayal, sex, adultery, murder, conspiracy — in other words, all the elements of Period Film 101, but rendered without variation to the norms they play in a movie like this. Regardless of history, the prerequisites heed no singular style or aim, appearing only because as a movie of such, it is to be expected. The other anticipatory aspect of period film, the extravagantly elegant costume design (and filmed exquisitely by Paco Femenia), is one of the few marvels to look at. The other, Pilar López de Ayala as Joan, is almost uncontainable, especially when compared to her Fabio-esque counterpart, Daniele Liotti. Directed by Vincente Aranda.
