Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Greg Muskewitz

"Small consolations."
3 stars

What starts off as a sort of cat-and-mouse hunt, a Tom vs. Jerry if you will, with ex-FBI agent Ecks (Antonio Banderas) searching for Sever (Lucy Liu), a cryptic weapons and martial arts specialist, inevitably becomes a partnership of sorts to team up against a greater evil.

(Sever has kidnapped the son of a weapons creator, who has perfected a new killing micro-device called “softkill.”) The animated theme sticks, as the eminent cartoonish action and violence, surprisingly used in an effective and inexcessive way, is choreographed with a steadfast eye for detail by director Wych Kaosayananda (or simply “Kaos,” a worthy label here). Coupled with some genuinely tricksy revelations (nothing of terrible shock for the attentive viewer), those certain extra details, the jiggle of Liu’s cheeks as she fires off numerous rounds of ammo, or the way the camera follows a man shot from the top of a building — in slow-motion, and in one take without edit — on his descent onto a car several stories below, or the framing of two cars simultaneously flipping over the protagonists, are enough to validate this otherwise wholly unrealistic action vehicle as slightly above average from its typical littermates. With Gregg Henry, Ray Park and Talisa Soto.

[Worth-seeing.]
