"Excuse the feminist propaganda that follows."
4 stars

This is not a man-hating movie. It's a jerk-hating movie. And if you can't distinguish, then you're a jerk. Also, I frankly take offense to anyone protesting. For every 80 movies Hollywood churns out where women are objectified, degraded, or simply a male fantasy, there is *maybe* one where the tables are turned.

All the guys in this movie are scum and get what they deserve. Note I said "guys". There are "men" in this movie too. Like Midler's uncle. He's cool. He's a man. And there are some pretty disgusting women presented in this movie. I mean, Sarah Jessica Parker criticizes the group as "a bunch of battered women at a buffet."

So anyways, this *IS* a chick flick. "Guys" will not like it. They don't like the idea of their male-dominated world being threatened. If you see this movie with a guy like that, I suggest you re-think your choices. If you're a woman and you don't like it, I suggest you think hard about why you dislike the idea of equality among the sexes.

I'm off track. Excuse me a moment while I shut the feminist in me up.

OK, back to the movie. A summary: A woman commits suicide because her husband has a tabloid-headlining affair. Before doing so, she writes to her three best friends from college. Her death brings them together just as each of them are being betrayed by the men in their lives. One is a neurotic, bookish mom. One, a Hollywood star. One, a loudmouthed housewife. They decide to get revenge on their respective mates. After this goes quite swimmingly for some time, it is however, evil, petty and stupid. After realizing the errors of their ways, they decide to do the noble thing and concentrate on helping other women like themselves.

I found this movie to be quite funny. It's established as absurd, so anything goes, and does, and it's silly and lovely. Midler especailly is good, and normally she annoys the piss out of me. Keaton really delivers. Her gay daughter kicks total ass. Hawn actually doesn't piss me off - quite an accomplishment for her. The writing is fine for this genre, silly, predictable, nothing special. Direction is straightforward and gets the job done. Costuming and set design are stunning.

In short, this movie is great for a ladies night. It's also a good test for the man in your life. And I thought it was a well done piece. Don't you oppress me, jerk. 4 sporks.
