Refreshingly free of standard biker stereotypes, while at the same time celebrating some of the more risque aspects of the culture, Biker Boyz was a painless, empty piece of filmmaking that doesn't try to be anything more than guys on bikes revving and racing around.First of all, 95 percent of the bikers in this film are black. Don't come into this film expecting to see beer-swillin', Harley ridin' crank heads - they only get a brief cameo, and even Kid Rock's token white biker president, (or prez) looks like he takes the occasional shower. Essentially plotless, the film features Derek Luke in an unconvincing role as a young biker out to proove himself in the L.A. biking underground, mostly by pulling reckless stunts and copping an attitude. And wearing yellow.
There's really not much more to it than that. Turns out the man he thought was his father, and who was killed right at the beginning of the film, wasn't his father. Smoke, played by pizza-scarred Larry Fishburne, self proclaimed 'King Of LA' is actually his daddy. There, now you don't have to see the movie, or watch Empire Strikes Back. That is the only real subplot that gets explored at any length.
Which is disappointing, because there is one very appealing feature in this movie, and no, I'm not referring to the mediocre drag races and Mexican kids on 4 wheelers - I'm talking about the leather clad bike dyke, who not only flirts with bikini-clad bike washers, but looks damn sexy doing it. If there is one thing I need to see more of in modern film, it's chicks who dig chicks. On bikes. Frankly, I was surprised such a mediocre film decided to focus on that particular aspect of biker lore, but given the current demand for HLA, it's not completely baffling. This is not FATF for the bike crowd. This is not well filmed, nor well written, but it won't make you wince. If you want to take a break from the insane gore of Final Destination 2, or if you just want to take a chick to a picture, especially a chick who is into bikes, other chicks, or both, then this is the flick for you.
