Guru, The

"Minor, offbeat fun."
4 stars

Hybrid of a typical rom-com and a typical Bollywood musical. The result: a somewhat disingenuous but fairly entertaining little movie.

The fairness doesn’t spread all the way around the movie, selecting a British-Indian dance teacher (Jimi Mistry) who comes to the U.S. to make it big. Director Daisy von Scherler Mayer approaches the male characters with indifference, ranging from banal to cliché stereotypes (i.e., Indian cab drivers, or 7-11 clerks), but she is particularly harsh and misogynistic towards the women characters: Heather Graham’s porno actress-cum-good Catholic girl (“My pussy is the door to my soul”), Marisa Tomei’s poseur impresario, Christine Baranski’s upper-crust and glib mother. Mistry bumbles into an acting gig, which turns out to be a porno with Graham (“She hasn’t been as good since The Prime of Miss Jean’s Booty”), but when he covers at Tomei’s spiritual coming-out party as a guru, he takes on the role to lead to the fame he wants, while trying to win Graham’s heart. The stereotypes grow in abundance and the romantic back-and-forth games serve as little refreshment, but the offbeat and sometimes downright cruel humor still finds a place that allows it to gel. The musical numbers, divided between Bollywood numbers and American knock-offs (Grease) congregate partway through for some high energy and genuinely amusing choreography and anachronistic humor. With Michael McKean, Dash Mihok and Emil Marwa.
