There are very few movies I am ALWAYS in the mood to watch. This is at the top of that very short list. It's got everything. Adventure, a hero, a villan, a glorious goal, danger, risk, people who were wronged, characters we care about, and outer space!
For those who don't know the story, the Apollo 13 trip to the moon got very little attention until everything went wrong. Tom Hanks is Jim Lovell, Commander of the mission. He is flanked by Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton. Gary Sinise should have gone, but the doctor is a butthole. Good thing, though, cause he saves their asses. And Ed Harris steals the show as the mission control guy. He's so cute.
Tom Hanks is the everyman. He is our vulnerable hero - the genius who needs Kevin Bacon to check his math - the man who went to the moon and named a moutain after his wife.
The supporting cast does a superb job. They all serve their purposes, and are not only accessable, but very much humanized.
The direction is breathtaking. In a movie like this, pretty pictures are not only a plus, but a virtual requirement, and boy does Howard pull it off. The dialogue is adequate - you believe the characters, and that's what counts, but the plot is flawless. The story itself was thrilling enough, but to boil events down to such a great 2 hours is in my mind, very admirable. Some people say the direction was slow. I say fuck it, I wanna see pretty pictures of outer space while at the same time I'm sitting on the edge of my seat :P 5 sporks.
