Tom Hanks can do no wrong. After Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, this was Tom Hanks' next project. He chose wisely. Based on the actual events of the Apollo 13 mission, Hanks was playing Jim Lovell, one of three astronuats on a routine moon mission that no one on earth really cared about until disaster struck. The astronauts are in danger of perishing in space unless the crew on Earth (led by Ed Harris) can help bring them home alive.
Solid drama with great performances from Hanks, Harris, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Gary Sinise, Apollo 13 is engaging and powerful, regardless of the fact that you know how it's going to end. That's the sign of a good, fact-based drama: if you can forget about not knowing what's going to happen, if the movie pulls you in and holds your attention so that when the end does come, you may even be a little surprised by it.A quality film.
