Il Postino
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Chris Parry

"Expectations were too high. Above average, but no classic."
3 stars

This is such a Miramax movie. It's Italian, good stuff, slow moving and, in the end, fun. But is it the classic that so many say it is?

The short answer is no. The longer answer is this is an entertaining film, amusing, poignant, very European, pretty to look at, blah blah, but it lacks guts.

By that I mean, the point seems to get lost and doesn't seem all that important to begin with. The film covers too much time and in doing so just skips through it.

Certainly if you appreciate the look and sensibility of European film, or if your only alternatives are the latest Seagal celluloid vomit and Speed 8, then Il Postino is worth a rental.

But if you think you're about to see something life altering, think again. It's just not that grand.
