"Hyams at his best."
4 stars

After perpetrating 'Outland,' Peter Hyams made up for it with this excellent, intelligent almost-thriller.

Michael Douglas is a California judge who’s let too many sleazebags walk on technicalities. Noticing how disgusted Douglas has become with the system, an older fellow judge (Hal Holbrook) initiates him into a group of bitter justices who track down unjustly freed criminals and have them killed. Though this sounds like a reactionary fantasy, it isn’t just a thinking person’s Death Wish; the film does a neat reversal and, through Douglas’ troubled conscience, demonstrates that vigilante justice is as flawed and wrong-headed as the system itself.

Outstanding performances across the board — particularly Douglas, who might even be better here than he was in Wall Street — make this potentially dull movie (there’s not much action) crackle.

3/15/05 Jeff Anderson Even though it's manipulative, it keeps you interested. James B. Sikking is a STANDOUT!!!!! 4 stars
4/28/03 R.W. Welch One of your better conspiracy flicks, has a good low-key darkness about it. 4 stars
3/02/03 y2mckay Solid vigelante conspiracy movie. Predictable but still wildly entertaining 4 stars
3/02/03 Jack Sommersby Manipulative as hell, but undeniably affecting. Hyams directing is, again, top-notch. 4 stars
3/02/03 Charles Tatum Hyams' direction rises above predictable material 4 stars
