Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
[AllPosters.com] Buy posters from this movie
by Greg Muskewitz

"Yee-haw."
4 stars

Apparently the movie-version taken from a popular TV show (popular where? Japan? here?) about futuristic intergalactic bounty hunters, beginning with the end of one assignment, and quickly jumping to the second when a mysterious explosion causes widespread death without notice of any disease, virus, bacteria, but simply foul play.

The plot goes deeper than a regular animated film, perhaps because Japanese anime doesnít feel restricted (at least, not always) to the drawn genre. While one might be able to imagine Atlantis or Treasure Planet as a live-action movie, itís a stretch, and one that isnít crossed by other animated choices such as Ice Age or Finding Nemo. For something like Cowboy Bebop or Hayao Miyazakiís Spirited Away, despite the fact that itís a directorial choice planned long ahead to use animation for the storytelling, there doesnít feel to be a limitation preventing the use of live-action in these movies aside from the assumption that some of the filmís creativity will likely be provided by computer animation. Otherwise, director ShinichirŰ Watanabe deftly constructs the flow and pace of the story (a bit ham-brained, but reaching nonetheless for some credibility that is too much exercise for other movies), the set-up and visual compositions of a scene, and like Miyazaki ó regardless of how much their content differs ó the treatment that the same values are being used to make a live-action film, as well as the components used to make them. The visual eye is not contented to merely sit and watch the action, nor does it feel the need to jump into the middle of it, so the frame of the action is going to be prepared to make the most out of the space, which it does. Aside from typical exaggerations of Japanese animation (the big-breasted bimbo, the overly sang-froid hero, the arsenal, etc.), there are really nice touches along the way like the drive-in Western, replete with wear-and-tear scratches and blotches, an exciting monorail shoot-out, an excellent use of shadows and perspective, and the overall movement and motion of the characters ó with the exception of a rubbery girl named Edward, whose limbs amorphously flap around like string-cheese. (Not to say there arenít cool action sequences, but the animated-animated characters are not being stretched to pandiculation as the humanly animated characters of The Matrix are.) Other complaints: the dialogue gets hokier the further the running-time goes, the love subplot is kooky, and why is it that animated characters donít see the need to change their clothes?

[Worth-seeing.]
