"Good, good, good shit. A step above the regular eye candy."
Finally, a *refreshing* action movie.Sure, DeNiro is not an action star. But he's a great actor, playing a part (technically, playing a part of playing a part). The plot was slightly more convoluted than that of "Mission: Impossible" but, the difference was, you could appreciate this film without really understanding it. I'd like to go back and watch it again -- not just for the amazing car chases, BTW -- because I know there was a lot going on that wasn't totally clear, but would make sense after a second look. The acting was amazing -- Stellan Skarsgard, unrecognizable behind that fat, except for the accent -- and the fast-cut directing that annoyed me somewhat in "Armageddon" worked extremely well here. Certainly the best action movie of the year (only "The Negotiator" comes close), possibly the best of the decade. (Tough to remember what else came out this decade; only "Die Hard 3" comes to mind and, much as I enjoyed that, this was better.) One complaint: overdone symbolism involving the meaning of 'Ronin'. Especially after the ending.I like movies that make you expect the cliches and then don't give them to you.
