Interview with the Vampire
[] Buy posters from this movie

"A magnificently directed piece of shit..."
2 stars

First off, let it be known that some geniuses are working on a new Vampire Chronicle flick that will combine Vampire Lestat/Queen of the Damned. Considering that the first was funny, whether intentional or not, and that the second was unreadable trash, and having read a synopsis of the script, I'm going to be more gleeful than Robert Downey Jr in an evidence room when it bombs.

Anyways, Interview with the Vampire is just such an elegant disaster. Here you have some lovely direction by Neil Jordan, and yet you can't get past Anne Rice's utterly preposterous prose. Of all the overrated writers in the world, Anne Rice is the Queen, and Stephen King is , well, the King. One can only take so much pontification on the elegance of a candleabra or how
a vampire must always be beautiful. Be beautiful...ha! Did RuPaul ghostwrite this or something?

With the exception of maybe Stephen Rea and Kirsten Dunst, all the principle actors appear as if they're performing in a school play written by the star drama student. Pitt, whose actually an ok actor, can only do so much with his character, and is pretty much just mopey and vapid throughout the entire film. Cruise does his best, but seems unsure of the dialogue Rice has coming from his mouth. Dunst does the best, but it'd be kinda hard to make a Bad Seed type character dull. Banderas is Banderas...I wished there were subtitles half the time he was onscreen.

This film does have its strengths, which doesn't amount to much given the weak foundation. The lighting is very well done, capturing wonderfully the murky candlelight of the 18th and 19th centuries...reminded me somewhat of Kubrick's work on Barry Lyndon. The costumes are great, and the special effects are skillfully employed. But in the end, I just can't get past Anne Rice's hack ass writing style.

The emperor wears no clothes...
