I don't get to actually go to the theater much. I therefore have to wait until a movie arrives on video before I get to watch it. I waited months for this title to hit video shelves only to be somewhat disappointed.I'm not really sure what I was expecting of this movie. As it turned out, it was nothing of what I expected it to be. The trailers on this film apparently showed me everything that was good about the film. When I see a film with Sean Connery as the lead role, I have high expectations.
The special effects in this film were not done well at all. At one point, Sean Connery (Allan Quatermain) sits in the frozen wastes of Mongolia. A tiger walks up to him. You can clearly see that this shot was laid in with special effects as the foreground seems to float in front of Connery's presence. I could list a myriad of situations like this.
And what's with Captain Nemo? Played by Naseeruddin Shah, Nemo's character didn't seem to fit. Somehow, I felt like I should be watching Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
Remember I'm delivering all of this to you as the average movie patron. Someone who may not read comic books, someone who doesn't know more than maybe one or two characters gathered to form the The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Perhaps Director Stephen Norrington should have thought of that.
Even the title is incorrect. It's not all gentlemen. You've got Peta Wilson playing the character of Mina Harker. Well OK, maybe it is an all guy thing, but Peta Wilson sure doesn't LOOK like a guy. She looks pretty darned hot in one scene. Black leather and a bit of lace sure makes a gal look different, she can bite me anytime.
The entire film basically goes like this. You've got a bad guy who intends to create new weapons and get the rest of the world to go to war with each other. Bad guy can then charge excessive amounts of cash to sell new types of arms to warring countries. Top it all off by getting scientists to re-create the special abilities of our League, and he can then sell that ability as well. It's up to The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen to stop him. It's much more complex than that, but you get the idea.
While it sounds like I'm really Bitch-slapping this film, I'm not. If you go into this film without alot of expectations, you can have a good time, yet I can see why this film only did about 66 million at the boxoffice.Keep an open mind and this film will be fun. There are moments when you will surely think this film is extremely corny. At least by renting it on video you won't come out of the theater thinking "Damn, I spent eight bucks to see that?"
