"Lip my stockings!"
5 stars

Lost In Translation is director Sofia Coppola's follow up to 1999's The Virgin Suicides, a movie I fell in love with following a late night viewing on IFC one night. This is the same kind of film for me, very much a love at first sight experience.

Bill Murray is Bob Harris, an American movie star who is doing what so many stars these days do: he's gone overseas to endorse a product (whiskey, in this case) and collect a nice paycheck.. Bob's bored. He's ostensibly having a midlife crisis. He's thousands of miles away from his wife and children (heard from, but never seen). He's creatively bankrupt, not having a film project that he can really sink his teeth into; and the trip to Japan, while the money may be nice and will help cover the cost of refurbishing of his office at home (which his wife routinely calls, faxes, and FedExes about), isn't really what he needs. So he spends a fair amount of time sampling the very product he's hawking in his hotel's bar.

It's in the hotel that Bob first meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), initially in a quiet moment in an elevator, and then later at the hotel bar. Charlotte's stuck in Japan with her photographer husband John (Giovanni Ribisi). He's always out on a shoot, and she's frequently stuck in the hotel. Bob and Charlotte are both suffering from insomnia, so it's the middle of the night when they cross paths in the bar. The first couple of instances where they're together are all about the feeling out process between strangers - the small talk - that so infrequently becomes more. Pretty soon, Bob and Charlotte actively start to seek each other out and make plans to do things together. And in Japan, following trips to bars, arcades, and the like, that leads to one thing: karaoke. You haven't experienced pure movie joy until you've heard Scarlett Johansson crooning the Pretenders' "Brass In Pocket (I'm Special)", only to be topped by Bill Murray belting out Roxy Music's "More Than This."

It's important to note that the relationship between Bob and Charlotte is not sexual at all, save for two moments: one scene on Bob's bed where his hand grazes her foot, and the closing moments of the film when the two share a parting kiss...and even those are more moments of tenderness than of eroticism. It's not meant to be a May-December encapsulated down into a week, and it's not meant to be the pseudo-Lolita feel of a man in his mid-fifties falling for a girl in her early- to mid-twenties. It's just...sweetness. I can put it any more plainly than that.

Lost In Translation is a movie of comfortable and uncomfortable silences. You can sense when Bob and Charlotte connect, because there doesn't seem to be an awkward moment between them when one is searching for the right thing (or any thing, for that matter) to say. They have the demeanor of old friends that have known each other for years and are simply content to be in each other's company, and it certainly doesn't hurt that Johansson plays Charlotte as very much an old soul. On her own, Charlotte seems uncomfortable in her own skin. She's not sure getting married was the right thing to do. Her day trips in Japan out on her own leave her cold: she ends up at a monastery, expecting to be moved, and instead feels nothing. It's different when she spends time with Bob; they can sit there in their own little pocket universe of the world, since they don't understand the Japanese language ("Why do they mix up their 'l's' and 'r's'," Charlotte asks Bob. "For yucks," he says. "They have to entertain themselves because it's obvious that we're not doing it for them.") or a lot of the customs as well.

Murray rocks. He was grossly overlooked as Herman Blume in Wes Anderson's Rushmore, and I hope the same doesn't happen here, because Murray as Harris is just plain fun to watch. When he starts to come alive in Charlotte's presence, it's Not the Bill Murray of old kind of funny, but a far more subdued, far more restrained performance. You see the guy truly start to live.

As the catalyst for that, Johansson is just about perfect as Charlotte. Charlotte's studied philosophy at Yale, so you know she's smarter than you, and she knows she's smarter than you. She's always got that sort of cynical half-smile of bemusement, whether she's seeing through the façade of the movie star shallowness of Kelly (cute-as-a-button Anna Faris channeling her inner Diaz in an all-too-brief appearance), the actress that may or may not be screwing around with Charlotte's husband on the side, or seeing the inherent charm of Bob working on everyone he comes across. Johansson's just a great young actress who pretty much went toe to toe with Murray in this, and that's hard to do. Following excellent turns in Ghost World and The Man Who Wasn't There, and now this, Johansson's got quite the streak going. She's definitely one of my favorite actresses these days.

There's something to be said for Sofia Coppola, as well. Lost In Translation had the unenviable task of following The Virgin Suicides, and Coppola herself had to face down the misstep that was The Godfather Part III and living in the shadow of a famous father. But she's done that. She allows the characters in this film to come to life. Bill Murray isn't playing Bill Murray, he's creating Harris seemingly from scratch, and she's letting him. Charlotte and husband may be a thinly veiled copy of Coppola and her husband Spike Jonze (allegedly, of course, but you can see the resemblance), but Johansson made the role her own, and likely at Coppola's insistence.

Good story, strong performances, with the light touch of a director who is deserving of the praise that is coming her way...I'm afraid Lost In Translation will get lost in the shuffle come awards time, but as of right now, I don't think I'll see a better film anytime soon.
