"Low standards."

Self-imposed quirky fantasy concerning Elijah Wood as a college drop out trying to make it on his own as a writer and residing in a funky apartment building with equally funky residents.

However, Wood’s writings consist of wet dream fantasies in the form of letters to his MIA father (it’s a scary thing when his co-habitants consider “ambition,” “passion,” and “inspiration” to be big words, and must speak volumes about his writing), whom he tries to get info about during long distance calls with his drunken Texan mother. Romances bud in the meantime, though any action, especially anything out of the ordinary, tend to build up an immunity as far as viewer belief goes; even once the fantasy segments fade away, there is the lingering question—a stifling one—of how much is actually reality. To impose that upon the viewer, and not within the context of keeping them on their toes, is an awfully big demand for something so inconsequential. The perky, bouncy, hollow sound of the score doesn’t assist in the grounding of realism. With Franka Potente, Mandy Moore, Elizabeth Perkins, and Deborah Harry.

[Not to be bothered with.]
