"An interesting but flawed romantic drama"
4 stars

Anthony Minghella returns to the writer/director’s chair with Cold Mountain, based on the book by Charles Frazier. It’s an interesting film, filled with great photography, impressive settings, some really good action and romance, which is the film’s main aim. And that is exactly where the film becomes too shaky on its story and prevents it from being a brilliant Civil War masterpiece. But there’s still plenty of good in it.

The film starts off explosively during the last days of the Civil War where the Confederate stronghold in Petersburg is being pounded by the Union. One of the Confederate soldiers, Inman (Jude Law), used to reside in Cold Mountain, North Carolina before the war, and as we’re told in flashbacks, flirted with the daughter of a preacher (Donald Sutherland) called Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman). They started to fall in love just as Inman was being shipped off towards the front, and Ada promised Inman that she would wait for him to return. Inman gets wounded during a raid and decides he’s had enough of fighting and decides to AWOL out of the Confederate hospital and back to Cold Mountain where his love awaits, and during the course of the journey he meets several people. Meanwhile back in Cold Mountain, Ada’s father has died, and since she’s a city girl, she doesn’t know jackshit about farming, so a nearby friend of hers Sally Swanger (Kathy Baker), lends her a farmhand called Ruby (Renee Zellweger), a scrappy drifter whom helps and teaches Ada how to farm.

Yes, this film contains all the prerequisites of an epic film, cold beautiful landscapes photographed by John Seale, some realistic and accurate settings of the civil war, and a certain dark and low-key overtone that dominates the film. Minghella’s direction is effective in several powerful scenes, like the scene where Sally Swanger and her husband Esco (James Gammon) are greeted and completely fucked over by the local deserter busters headed by Teague (Ray Winstone) and his hateful assistant Bosie (Charlie Hunnam), and though Bosie’s back flips take away certain emotional punch, there’s still enough left to shock.

Unfortunately, in some parts Mingella’s direction is undermined by several haphazards. The opening battle sequence where the Union tunneled into the fort and packed it with explosives, which blew part of the fort to hell, is well made at first but when it gets into the battle and carnage the whole scene ends up being anticlimactic, and ultimately forced. There are several moments where the film slows down in pace especially in the parts where Ada is left wandering in her thoughts, and a voice narration is used to plug these parts but is very ineffective since the whole scene seems too artificial. The only saving grace in these scenes is when Zellweger’s Ruby shows up, and thanks to her she manages to maintain momentum, and when Ruby’s dad Stobrod (Brendan Gleeson) shows up, it just adds more to the fun. Inman’s voyage introduces us to some interesting characters, like a disgraced preacher (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), a poor fucker (Giovanni Ribisi) that has a hot wife and sisters, and young widowed single mother (Natalie Portman). Though these characters are very interesting, they remain underdeveloped and may end up being simple mere plot devices to maintain the story going, though needless to say, they never slow down the film’s pace. Portman’s character though is the best of the three and she gives quite a performance that would almost redeem her from her shitful work in George Lucas’s Star Wars prequels. But the major flaw comes up with the romantic part of the story, since due to the fact on how the whole romance between Ada and Inman was set up in such brief moments, it’s not really convincing. Thanks to this, when the characters are separated and afterwards both long to come back towards each other, it’s not that convincing either. Not to mention the fact that Law and Kidman have zero chemistry, and when they finally find one another and have sex, it’s more like a one-night stand rather than a passionate love. Still, there’s enough story and action in this film and enough well made production values and artistic quality to make this film worthwhile, even though it misses the mark of being a great epic.

The acting is very low-key but effective, and there are a couple of standouts like Law whom gives out a much understated performance. Nicole Kidman is OK, though she would’ve been better since she was too cold in the film (the unexpected sex scene saves it somewhat though). The scene stealer is Renee Zellweger since she chews up the scenery (and Kidman’s character) like hell, even if at times she tends to overact a little. The rest of the cast was alright.

In the end, there’s enough material to make this film worth your money though honestly, it could’ve been so much better. Despite the fact that the film misses the mark that it was aiming for, it’s still a very well made effort by Anthony Minghella, but it’s only up to him if he can actually make a better film than The English Patient. Still, it’s a very good film worth seeing. 4-5
