Perfect Score, The
[] Buy posters from this movie
by Laura Kyle

"It's like a dumb SPY KIDS."
1 stars

I am guessing the three screenwriters of THE PERFECT SCORE did not do well on the SAT, because their movie about the test is not just embittered, but stupid.

The Perfect Score is dripping with MTV style lessons like: looks can be deceiving, drugs are bad, and don't cheat on the SAT, even though it is racist and represents everything wrong with education and society. Nice try, MTV, or more specifically director Brian Robbins. Stick to the television shows you make Mr. Robbins (What I Like About You, The Days), where gigantic plot holes and over-the-top acting is acceptable.

Plot: kids are mad about how the SAT is a "suck ass test," so they decide to band together and undermine the system.

To explain the plan of how high school students (looking about twenty-five or so) unite to steal the questions to the SAT, would be quite laborious, because I am not really aware of the logic the conspiring students held. Motivation: clear. Means: hmm... pretending to be mail boys to infiltrate the ETS building? Distracting a security guard with flowers from a secret admirer?

With the exception of the consistently enjoyable Scarlett Johansson, the rest of Score's young cast is laughable at best, probably due to writing and direction more than to a lack of talent. While Leonardo Nam, playing a sex-obsessed pothead, gets some laughs, he falls seriously victim to the "it will be funny if I make lots of exaggerated faces and talk in an artificial surfer dude dialect" syndrome that is so commonly found in a lot of the characters of today's teen comedies. Did I mention that other than being a big Mary Jane fan, he also seems to be the wisest and most aware of the group... haven't we seen this before? So MTV: are drugs funny or are they bad?

There is a superficial attempt to show diversified youth in the picture, and not conform to showcasing good-looking white leads and stereotypes, but that is essentially what Score does. You have your typical pretty white girl over-achiever, your all American white boy, your black "I want to be in the NBA" goodhearted dude, your crazy Asian dude providing comic relief in the background (reminiscent of Sixteen Candles... it was okay then, but a second time around? No thanks!), your wild rebel girl, and your cute guy.

The poorly developed and ultimately dull characters have to carry out a predictable, yet 100% implausible, storyline, and in the meantime get across some very annoyingly overstated themes. They enter and exit the film in an obviously scripted and staged manner, operating under this mechanical focus of Robbins, void of any art, charm, or intelligence. How dare this movie be compared to The Breakfast Club and Ocean's Eleven!

Much like the cheaters the film depicts, the creators behind THE PERFECT SCORE managed to avoid any ounce of originality, and they should be punished for plagiarizing a bundle of movies. Seeing as how the movie didn't make the grade, though, who really cares?
