Amor de Hombre

"Oh, just shut up and shag her already."
2 stars

If there's one thing that I hate about movies with a gay theme, it's when they refuse to take a stand. Amor de Hombre is a fine case in point - a story about a gay man and straight woman who are seemingly all but in love with each other, crying on each other's shoulder about how they can't find anyone to fall in love with them. It'd be a lot more effective if it weren't clear that the two are desperately in love with each other, only far too interested in shagging other people to actually give into it.

Ramon (Andrea Occhipinti) is a good looking guy. He's able to pick up a quickie within eight seconds of entering any given room, and it seems he's not real picky about who he actually deals it up to. Esperanza (Loles León) isn't so lucky. She's a little older than she'd like, a little heavier than she'd like, and has about as much luck picking up the lads as Michael Jackson has had of late.

So these two are pissy at the world because they can't find true love, but only one of them has a case to plead; the other couldn't pass by a stray cat without sniffing around its behind. So they complain and moan to their collection of gay friends, and nobody really seems to care very much, because SHUT UP ALREADY! Gosh, you're getting more sex than seventeen Kobe Bryant's and your complaining.

"All I really want is true love... ooh, look at the cooze on that himbo! I'm just going to take off to the bathroom for twelve seconds..."

After a while, it does become clear that the meaningless sex routine isn't Ramon's be all/end all. And he does get on very well with Esperanza. So... why not give her a try?

Because that would make this film very much not agreeable to its target audience. When Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy dared propose that a girl who dates girl might 'come back around' for another shot at a guy, the film was damned by some for daring to suggest that a woman could be re-converted.

And when Gigli portrayed J-Lo as a lesbian, only for her to throw herself at Ben Affleck later on in the piece... well, nobody really cared because Gigli was a piece of crap.

But in Amor de Hombre, we're given a good solid hour where nothing much happens beyond incessant moaning and infuriatingly long, drawn out scenes where the obvious is ignored.

Note to viewers: If you're a gay guy with a great female friend who you get on with better than anyone in the world and you both complain to everyone and anyone about your lack of success with love, while not being real picky about the bits you'll take into your mouth in public restrooms, to yourselves a favor and try it the regular way once or twice. Hey, I'm not trying to convert anyone here, but it'd give the rest of us a break from your bitching for a while.

For crying out loud - at this point even I'd throw the leg over Esperanza, just to shut her up for a few days. Ramon?

Amor de Hombre isn't so much a 'gay film' as it is a boring film, with a lot of gay characters in it. It refuses to make a point, refuses to end and refuses to keep the audience from looking at their watches. There are certainly worse films around, but there are also many better - both in this genre and otherwise.
